Skin & Aging

A broad literature exists on skin, wound healing and aging processes, including around 30 human studies — predominantly small controlled trials, pilot and case reports — supplemented by many preclinical works in cell and animal models.

The studies examined hydrogen-rich water (drunk or as a bath or topical application), H₂ inhalation and hydrogen-containing dressings, for example in wound healing, inflammatory skin conditions, UV-induced oxidative stress and skin aging. Endpoints included wound course, skin moisture and elasticity as well as oxidative markers.

Some papers report favorable effects on oxidative stress and individual skin parameters, but the studies are small, short and inconsistent. The evidence is preliminary; statements about an established anti-aging or healing benefit cannot be derived from it.

Two patients with pemphigus vulgaris — an autoimmune blistering disorder — developed secondary skin ulcer infections with opportunistic pathogens that were treated with local wet packing using hydrogen water, resulting in healing over two months of follow-up.
