Oxidative stress

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and the body’s own protective systems. Here H₂ is studied as a possible selective radical scavenger; many papers measure markers such as d-ROMs or malondialdehyde. Oxidative stress is the most broadly studied field in this database: around 356 papers touch on this topic — including roughly 36 randomized controlled trials and about 56 pilot and observational studies in humans, supplemented by over a hundred reviews as well as numerous mechanistic and preclinical investigations.

Because oxidative stress underlies many diseases, it often serves in studies as a unifying effect endpoint — measured for example via d-ROMs, malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity or 8-OHdG. The studies mainly examined hydrogen-rich water (HRW) and inhalation of H₂ gas, across very different groups ranging from healthy people to the chronically ill.

Several studies report favorable shifts in individual markers; the findings are, however, heterogeneous, the studies mostly small and short, and the markers themselves not always clinically meaningful. The evidence points to an antioxidant signaling effect but overall remains preliminary and does not permit any statement about concrete benefit in disease.
